In our opinion nothing looks better than the good old British clay roofing tiles, laid right will last a hundred years and looks better as it ages.
However there are some types of tiles and especially slates that are well past there sell by date and need replacing. but due to the cost of products, labour, in some cases streging of the roof structure, solashiel may provide a better and cost effective option
ASPHALT ROOFING SYSTEMS
Used extensively throughout the Uk on domestic and industrial concrete roof structures. Watching a good team of asphalters lay the product is a sight to behold. Spreading the very hot asphalt to all the contours of a roof and eliminating pondin is truly a work of art.
A well laid asphalt roof can be expected to last 20 to 30 years. Due to weight issues not a good idea to apply more ashapt after this time unless removing the old asphalt first. Good system but prone to cracking, lifting, and crazing.
RUBBER ROOFING SYSTEMS
Marketed As the long term solution to flat roof problems but in fact never lives up to its promise. Relies heavily on mastic and hot weld joints, to weather proof vital areas and is prone to stretching and contracting during adverse weather conditions resulting in ( Folds ) and ( Bubbles ) in the roof. resulting in ponding and leakages. Our Coatings cannot be applied over rubber roofing, this need to be stripped off first and discarded. In our opinion not a good system due tyo to many joints / seams and the problem of weatherproofing upstands / copings etc.
ELASTOMERIC COATINGS
Theses are water based and sometimes oli based systems that look like a thick paint, the normal method is to apply them with a roller / brush / or airless spray. The system works well on upstands plinths and copings with regard to weatherproofing and done the right way will last 20 plus years.
They work best over a base primer coat of fibre glass resin, this forms a solid sterile base for the flexible seamless coating to adhere to, Once dry the coating will have an elongation factor of about 300 to 500%.Although not necessary it is an advantage to cover with stone chippings as this helps in preventing solar breakdown over time. System is very good on small roofs up to about 15 sq Metres.
FIBRE GLASS ROOFING SYSTEMS

There are 2 ways we deal with felt roofing and to work to a clients budget. 1 / If the roof structure is sound and felt is well adhered to the decking its possible to apply SOLARPLAZ over the felt with out stripping the felt off and the resulting costs.........our guarantee would be limited to 10 years on this. 2 / Our normal preference is to strip the roof back to the joists, apply new decking, firings etc, with warm deck insulation as an option......finish with SOLAR-PLAZ COATING

Once a roof has been treated with elastomeric coatings it becomes almost impossible to remove it completely unless your removing the decking as well, provided the coating is in reasonable condition its quite possible to prepare and coat with SOLARPLAZ OR SOLAR SHIELD COATING without the need to do a full strip out. Insulation can be applied on this type of roofing if required.
Once a roof has been treated with rubber overlay its impossible to apply THE SOLAR RANGE over this. The main reason is that almost 90% of rubber roofs have areas that have lifted from the original substrate and is in fact " Floating ". The only course of action is to completely strip out the rubber back to the original decking / substrate. After preparation of the substrate SOLARPLAZ AND SOLARSHIELD can be successfully applied.

Once a roof has been fitted with Asphalt, it will normally have a long life before and major issues become apparent, the main problems arise from cracking and crazing, theses can normally be repaired within reason, As with everything there comes a time when a full renovation is required this could be a full strip or repair and coat. We do not recommend putting more asphalt on existing due to the possible weight problem with the roof structures. Solar Shield is a good choice for renovating old ashpalt roofs without the need for styripping.

For pitched roofs tiles and slates have been the standard for british properties, laid right most tiles roofs will last in excess of 30 years with minimal maintenance required. ( however some of the fixing methods for hip and ridge tiles on newer systems leave a lot to be desired ) Nothing beats in our opinion the old method of bedding theses in sand & cement !! nothing beats this method proven through the passage of time in all climatic extremes. sometimes a roof will need a major overall........and need replacing in our opinion it should be replaced with like for like especially to keep in with the house design which will be reflected in the future value of the property. Sometimes a cheaper option is to coat the tiles instead of strip and rebuild, providing it does not effect the overall look of the roof or property. The SOLARPLAZ system works very well over old slate and especially asbestos tiles ( See pictures ) .

Once a fibre glass roof starts deteriorating its best to have it srtripped back to the decking, the reason being is that most fibreglass fail do to cracks appearing and water getting in between the fiberglass and the decking that it is bonded to. At this stage SOLARPLAZ is not a good idea because the fibreglass will be hollow ( floating ) in places and would provide weak spots. Better to strip , re prepare the decking and the apply chosen coating.

TRADITIONAL 3 LAYER BUILT UP FELT ROOFING
This has been the main roof protection in the UK for many years and is well past its sell buy date. Used on the bulk of flat roof extensions for the past 50 years due to its ease of installation and cheapness. A good installation
on new decking could be expected to give reasonable service for 10 years, a bad installation would normally fail after a few years, esp in areas of heavy rainfall, With its high fire risk and environmental issues this type of roofing should be confined to the past In our opinion should be outlawed due to the environment wastage and fire hazard,

CASE STUDY OF A ROOF WITH MULTIPLE FINISHES
This is a case study of a contract we carried out for a church in south London back in 2015. We was already under contract carrying out external wall coatings when the church asked us to give our advice on how they could repair there very badly leaking roof. They had already received quotes ranging from £25,000 to £50,000 to repair and weatherproof the main flat roof areas......and was confused as to the best materials / system for there roof. They products suggested was eternit slates for the tiled areas, and felt for the flat roof areas.this came out at almost £50,000.00.and would still no solve the flashing, decayed brickwork, copings, and renderer areas that would still allow rain water to pass.
Because the roof was built out of different products and altered over the past 100 years using concrete, slate, wood, and asphalt only a polyurea coating would be able to solve this problem.
The photos below show the works and the completed contract . The client was understandably pleased with the results and esp as the costs was less than £15,000. to completely renovate the roofs and also other areas such as fire wall, rendered areas, flashings, and the decayed brickwork areas.

CASE STUDY OF A ROOF WITH ASBESTOS TILES ( 10 YEARS AND STILL GOOD )
This was a nice contract down in Devon that we was employed to renovate the external wall finishes. Again like the church the owners of the property asked us to check out the roof because the home owner was getting duct on her washing and they wanted to know if it was coming from the roof.
We arranged for an as specialist surveyor to inspect the roof as we thought it was blue asbestos. Confirmation from them that this was blue asbestos the property owner want to find out from a specialist company how much it was going to cost to have it stripped and disposed off.
The costs was ridiculous we already had scaffolding up and arranged with the client to spray the roof with SOLAR PLAZ COATINGS. But before the roof could be cleaned down we sprayed a special resin sealant to lock the fibres in so that the roof could be hot power washed.. On completion of this the roof was cleaned.areas made good ,,,,,,,surface primed and SOLARPLAZ applied...this contract was completed in 2009 and was inspected in 2019 everything is still looking weathertight and good.
